When I was of the age to start drinking, I am not certain that there were
many "filling stations" that sold alcohol yet.  There was a Convenient
store nearby, but that one didn't have gas pumps.  There were some
SuperAmerica stations that had stores, too.
 
IIRC just about all of them did sell cigarettes but, as I didn't smoke, I
didn't buy any.
 
Nowadays, it would be odd if someone who drank beer never bought at such a 
place as just about all of the stations have some sort of small store
included.
