My close-up vision is worse than my distance, and I have some astigmatism. I've been wearing progressives since 2006, I got my first pair at an optometrist in an old building on the second floor, and my first steps with them were down an outdoor wooden staircase. A bit harrowing, but as you mention, you learn to use the zones of the lenses. My mom got sick of switching glasses, so she got close up progressives with no distance correction so she could wear them all the time.
