Is it features to edit images? I think it's a combination of features and being easy to use. It's more than a simple image viewer, as it has plugins to do various things, but it also has some useful built-in features. And it has always been free and has never been nagware either. One of its features I use sometimes is its batch conversion feature - You can select multiple files with it and have it convert them from one format to another, with settings according to the destination format; you can also have it do things like batch-crop images, etc.. Also, one thing I'm used to with IrfanView is that by default, you can click & drag on an image to select a rectangular region (which you can then copy/cut out, etc.), and I've gotten very used to that. I haven't seen any other image viewer that lets you just open an image and click & drag to select a region (you might have to ues a menu option to enable selecting a region, for instance). Basically, it's the features, ease of use, and it's free with no nags.
