 It really depends on the chipset. There's a lot to dig into -- for
 example, Broadcom doesn't realize F/OSS drivers for their chipsets, so
 OpenWRT needs to use a different driver. DDWRT paid a license, so they
 use a different driver (and may work better)

 Some routers have problems with specific radios, but there's lots of
 information in the wiki and the forums. My Netgear R6400 worked find,
 but the 3rd radio didn't show up without quite a bit of tweaking.

 I've used Linksys routers with Cortex chips and been very happy with
 both firmwares.
