My brief trials with Linux were pretty good as well, although I was
using the simple to install and more Windows-Like versions of it
like Puppy Linux, and not trying to keep it running for very long
or trying to do all of the things I'd like to do if I were using
it full time.

That was a few years ago though so I'm not right up to date on that..

But when you see the notes on what is required, finding and installing
Libraries (or?) to fix or upgrade the more serious versions of Linux
it sounds like there's a lot to learn to get the most out of it.
