The Revival of BBS Culture in Brazil
Mauro Paes Correa - Sysop of Telesc.net.br BBS

In a world dominated by the algorithmic noise of modern social
media, a quiet revolution is taking place in Brazil. The Bulletin
Board System (BBS), the cornerstone of pre-internet digital life,
is experiencing a surprising comeback. This revival is driven not
only by nostalgic "sysops" but also by a new generation of users
eager to discover the roots of telecomputing.

The Brazilian BBS scene began its journey in the mid-1980s. Pioneer
systems like Canal VIP and the legendary Mandic BBS were the
gateways for many into the digital world. These platforms were more
than just file repositories; they were local hubs where virtual
interactions frequently transformed into real-world friendships - a
sense of genuine community that modern platforms often fail to
replicate.

A pivotal moment in this history was the creation of the RBT (Rede
Brasileira de Teleinformatica). The RBT played a crucial role in
implementing and expanding FidoNet across Brazil. While many
technologies from that era vanished, the RBT proved its
resilience, surviving the "web invasion" and remaining active to
this day. It stands as a living bridge between the past and the
future of the Brazilian amateur packet-switching networks.

Today, the number of nodes connected to FidoNet is growing once
again in Brazil. With the expansion of systems, there is a strong
expectation that even more nodes will be integrated by the end of
the year. This growth proves that the curiosity surrounding these
"vintage" systems stems from a desire for deeper connections. In a
BBS, you are not just a data point; you are part of a curated
neighbourhood. The Brazilian BBS spirit is not just remembered - it
is being dialled again.
