When I got home from four years in the military, I came home with an AOL
disc and used the free twelve hours in a few days. The email address was
bouncing right away, after those hours expired.

I checked into a bbs a day later and the logoff screen advertised a
local ISP with unlimited service for $85/yr. I was with that company
until the early 2000s.

Then I used a local wildcat bbs, which provided free internet with the
connection.

I never ever looked at aol or compuserv after that initial experience.
