You are aware I'm sure that several
European countries ended both the slave
trade and slavery long before we did,
and that it was both those nations left
and a combination of those on the left
and right not in power in the US that
fought tirelessly to end slavery here.
In fact, much like now, the issue was
both right and left wingers (of which
the Republicans were the left of the
time) who were largely working class
hated slavery both morally and becaue
it undermined their labor and wages.
The small businesses hated slavery
because it undermined the value of
their products.

It was the class of ultra-wealthy
agricultural magnates who owned slaves,
lobbied congress constantly to prevent
abolition legislation and finally, to
implement the fugitive slave act which
empowered bounty hunters who operated
not unlike ICE while the government,
like now, lookd the other way at
constitutional violations and incidents
such as legal black freedmen being
kidnapped back into slavery. It took
Bleeding Kansas, Harper's Ferry, and
Lincoln to force the issue.

And then of course, after the Civil War
ended, many of the traitors were able
to coast off their wealth and
reputations to face minimal
repercussions and go back being rich
and exploiting the poor and the
formerly enslaved.

Every leftist I know preaches this, so
I have no idea where you got this idea
that we don't admit that. But you seem
to not realized we were late to the
party and that we had to figh a war
about it PRECISELY becaue the
conservatives, the Democrats at tht
time, were insistent on protectin
wealth and property over the sanctity
of human life and American well being.
The left tends to talk about the civil
war as a class war, because in many
respects it was.

Also, for funsies, Lincoln was
