You are aware I'm sure that several European countries ended both the slave trade and slavery long before we did, and that it was both those nations left and a combination of those on the left and right not in power in the US that fought tirelessly to end slavery here. In fact, much like now, the issue was both right and left wingers (of which the Republicans were the left of the time) who were largely working class hated slavery both morally and becaue it undermined their labor and wages. The small businesses hated slavery because it undermined the value of their products. It was the class of ultra-wealthy agricultural magnates who owned slaves, lobbied congress constantly to prevent abolition legislation and finally, to implement the fugitive slave act which empowered bounty hunters who operated not unlike ICE while the government, like now, lookd the other way at constitutional violations and incidents such as legal black freedmen being kidnapped back into slavery. It took Bleeding Kansas, Harper's Ferry, and Lincoln to force the issue. And then of course, after the Civil War ended, many of the traitors were able to coast off their wealth and reputations to face minimal repercussions and go back being rich and exploiting the poor and the formerly enslaved. Every leftist I know preaches this, so I have no idea where you got this idea that we don't admit that. But you seem to not realized we were late to the party and that we had to figh a war about it PRECISELY becaue the conservatives, the Democrats at tht time, were insistent on protectin wealth and property over the sanctity of human life and American well being. The left tends to talk about the civil war as a class war, because in many respects it was.
