In my head, I separate the Church (an organization) from the Religion (a set of
beliefs).

The Church is NOT the Religion, but seeks (at first) to promote it.  But like
any organization, it can be infiltrated by the power-seeking and subverted.

IHMO: The Catholic Church has long been corrupted.  I think there were several
times when there was a purge and the Church got back to its mission, but it
keeps getting corrupted because power attracts those who lust for it.

The Church is hard to criticize, though.  There are many people in it who are
working to promote the Religion part.  But the higher levels are all corrupt.
