At the beginning of the war, partly due to the slow response in Europe, Ukraine was virtually 100% dependent on aid from the US. Fortunately for Ukraine, Biden was still president. He primarily supplied Ukraine with anti-tank weapons and artillery shells. If only Putin had waited until Trump had won, everything would have looked different, but who foresaw that Trump would win a second term?

The war changed, and Europe also came into the picture.

The power of the Republicans in the US ensured that Avdiivka, Ukraine's virtually impregnable fortress near Donetsk, was lost during the Biden era. Ukraine simply ran out of ammunition. That was the beginning of a retreat that continues to this day.

The election of Trump was the next nail in Ukraine's coffin. The country understood that it had to get to work on manufacturing weapons and ammunition itself. When Trump indicated on February 28, 2025, that Zelensky had no cards left, Ukraine was, in effect, already ready to play its cards.

The only thing Ukraine is still truly dependent on the US for is the acquisition of Patriot missiles. One might wonder how much longer, because the French/Italian SAMP/T NG system is going to change that in the course of 2026.

Once that becomes available to Ukraine, Trump will have nothing left to pressure Ukraine with. The only thing he can do then is openly side with Russia, and that seems to be a step too far even for Trump.
