I think you are looking at it the wrong way.

A shooter comes into the auditorium.  He only has a very limited time to do
something before he's taken out.  The person on the stage is easy since he's
the only one (of potentially a few) on the stage.

The people in the audience are another story.  It would take much longer for
the shooter to pick out Doocy or Faulkner, which means that there's a high
probability that he would fire indiscriminately into the audience, hoping to
take out the people he wanted.

That's the part that scares the "journalists".  They are used to getting
special treatment from the TDS crowd and not be a target.
